November 2014

November 2, 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. ~ W. Oscar Jones Choral Festival, St. John United Church of Christ

Defiance College music programs will present the annual W. Oscar Jones Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 4 and 6 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 950 Webster St. The performances will feature five choral ensembles including the DC Choral Union, DC Chamber Singers, DC Men’s Chorus, Black Swamp Honors Choir, and the Pride of Toledo Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus.

The performances are focused around the Black Swamp Honors Choir, a high school honors choir featuring 85 students from eleven area schools including Ayersville, Bryan, Defiance, Edon, Fairview, Lakota, Montpelier, North Central, Paulding, Tinora, and Wauseon.   In its fifth year of existence, the honors choir will perform three selections as well as a piece with the DC Women’s Chorus and another with the Sweet Adelines. The concert will open and close with combined choirs singing two patriotic numbers in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner.

Three conductors will be featured during the performance.  Andrew Schultz, director of music programs at Defiance College and founder of the Black Swamp Honors Choir, will conduct the DC Choral Union and Chamber Singers along with the Black Swamp Honors Choir. The DC Men’s Chorus will be conducted by RD Mathey, a choral conductor for 40-plus years with tremendous experience working with choirs and specifically men’s voices. The Pride of Toledo Chorus is conducted by Kay Seymour, an icon in the barbershop community.

November 6, 7:30 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series in Partnership with the Defiance Historian's Office and the Andrew L. Tuttle Memorial Museum Presents Dodworth Saxhorn Band, Historic Valentine Theater

Dodworth Saxhorn BandThe Dodworth Saxhorn Band is a re-creation of one of America’s first all-brass bands.  Today’s band uses antique brass valve horns and drums built between 1840 and 1880 to create fun and excitement through 19th century authenticity. Using original instruments, drama, poetry, dance and audience participation, the band brings America’s musical past to life.

November 7, 7:00 p.m. ~ 2014-2015 Young Audience Series Presents Cooking Caravan, Stroede Center for the Arts

November 11, 7:30 p.m. ~ Defiance College Community Band, Veterans Tribute Concert, Defiance Community Auditorium

The Defiance College Community Band will perform its annual “Tribute to Veterans” concert on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Defiance Community Auditorium, downtown Defiance. The concert will feature the Defiance College Chamber Singers and Defiance College Choral Union. DC director of bands Bridget Olenik will conduct the Armed Services tribute, and conductors Cathy Booth and Scott Rogers will round out the program with songs from our nation’s rich musical heritage. The concert will also include Jamie Blank, the “voice” of the DCCB, and playing of the greatest march ever written, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” 

Doors open at 6:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Come and help celebrate America and honor the men and women who made our freedom possible.

November 23, 7:00 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series Presents The Toledo Trio, Stroede Center for the Arts

The Toledo TrioComprised of pianist Michael Boyd, violinist Merwin Siu, and cellist Damon Coleman, the Toledo Trio performs traditional and contemporary literature for piano trio. Boyd, active as a soloist and collaborative artist, is Professor of Piano at the University of Toledo. Siu, Principal Second Violin of the Toledo Symphony, enjoys introducing audiences to works by contemporary composers. Coleman, also a member of the Toledo Symphony, has performed as a soloist across the county and in Europe, and has been featured on PBS specials and NPR broadcasts.

SwingmaniaSwingmania, AKA “The Jeff McDonald Band,” is a dedicated group of talented Toledo area musicians whose goal is to entertain whether the audience is accustomed to “the Big Band Swing Sound” or not. Swingmania’s musical library includes all the big name bandleaders Dorsey, Miller, James, Krupa, Kenton, Herman, Brown and more. From Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing” to Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” this band plays all the tunes you love.

January 25, 7:00 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series Presents Salzedo Harp Duo, Stroede Center for the Arts

Salzedo Harp DuoNancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn have performed together for over twenty-five years.  Both studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine.  They began playing together to promote the music of Carlos Salzedo, along the way uncovering a number of his unpublished duo harp works.  They have performed at conferences of the American Harp Society and the World Harp Congress and have given concerts and master classes throughout the United States.  Lendrim is Principal Harpist with the Toledo Symphony, and Guinn holds the same position with the Akron Symphony.

February 8, 7:00 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series Presents Du & Sim Piano Duo, Stroede Center for the Arts

Du & Sim Piano DuoThe Stroede Center welcomes duo pianists Ming-Wu Du and Helen Sim back to the stage for an evening of piano magic. One reviewer called them “a thrilling duo in glorious form.” This married couple met at Julliard and has since traveled extensively, exhibiting their unique blend of dexterity and artistry.  Du and Sim have won many musical honors and awards and have been exuberantly praised by critics. It has been said that they “bring a slick and suave finesse to their music-making, proffering a vibrant patina of sound and sure-fisted rhythmic variety.”

Big Band Sound of the DCCBAlways a favorite with Defiance audiences, the Big Band Sound of the DCCB continues to delight audiences. Organized as part of the Defiance College Community Band, the ensemble is comprised of area musicians who share a love of big band music.  Join director Scott Rogers, the DC Sisters, and the band for an evening of big band classics featuring the music of Ellington, Basie and Miller.

March 26, 7:30 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series Presents Old Crown Brass Band, Historic Valentine Theater

Old Crown Brass BandThe Old Crown Brass Band, founded in 2007, is a traditional British-style ensemble made up of brass and percussionists from northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.  The unique sound of this brass band stems from the use of instruments not typically found in the American concert band such as E-flat soprano and B-flat cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritone horns, euphoniums and bass and contrabass tubas.

March 29, 7:00 p.m. ~ DCCC 2014-2015 Performance Series Presents Denise Ritter & Michael Boyd in Concert, Stroede Center for the Arts

Denise Ritter & Michael BoydLyric soprano Denise Ritter has extensive oratorio experience with performances under the batons of world-renowned conductors, such as Robert Shaw and John Rutter. She is known for her ability to sing a variety of styles, her brilliant high notes, pure tone, warmth and musical intelligence. Michael Boyd is active as a soloist, collaborative artist, lecturer and teacher. Boyd has performed across the country including performances with the Rochester Philharmonic and Milwaukee Symphony. Ritter and Boyd present a program that includes works by Rodrigo, Wolf, Bizet, Berlioz and Granados.
